To objectively measure the activity levels of 1,146 women and men contributing to the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2006), participants wore accelerometers. Women averaged about 18 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise daily, while men averaged 30 minutes. Slightly more than one in three women had metabolic syndrome, and one in five had symptoms of depression. People who got at least 30 minutes of exercise a day were less likely to be depressed, less likely to have high cholesterol and less likely to have metabolic syndrome.
