massage_imageFeeling sore and listless? Do you find it hard to get a good night’s sleep? If so, why not consider getting a massage? Just because you are getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying the soothing effects a massage can bring. In fact, seniors may benefit more from a massage than their younger counterparts.

Many seniors may remember when massage was once only available through upscale health clubs or luxury spas. But that is no longer the case. Massage is more affordable than ever, and is offered in a wide variety of places. So if you have never had a massage before, it is never too late to start. Seniors are living longer and staying active longer than at any other time. They are busily engaging in activities that they have enjoyed for years with no intention of stopping simply because they are aging.

Seniors may hesitate to consider massage because of the mistaken belief that it may cause more discomfort than relief. But this is not the case. A good masseur will ensure that their treatment is going to reduce stress, pain or muscle tension without making the client feel discomfort.

Massage therapy is increasingly being considered a part of complementary or alternative medicine. In health care, it is not uncommon to see massage therapy offered alongside standard treatment for a range of medical conditions. Seniors that suffer from infirmities may experience relief from such conditions as arthritis, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Massage has even been used on those suffering from dementia as a way to help relax and reduce their agitation.

Still not convinced? Following are some issues seniors may alleviate with regular therapeutic massage.

Muscle stiffness
As the body ages it becomes increasingly difficult to keep muscles limber and free of the aches and pain that seem to come with growing older. Gentle massage actually stretches the muscles and when used regularly increases flexibility and reduces the chances of injury.

Poor circulation
Massage is well know for the beneficial effects on circulation. Even a gentle massage helps reduce the toxin buildup in muscle tissue. In addition, massage improves the circulation of lymph fluids, which are vital to maintaining a healthy immune system.

Anxiety
Sufferers of anxiety and depression benefit from massage as well. Massage not only reduces tension but the effects of a caring human touch are mentally therapeutic as well. In addition, those receiving regular massage report an increase in feelings of well-being.

Poor balance
Massage increases circulation and flexibility which stimulates the body’s awareness and improves reaction times. This in turn leads to increases in co-ordination and agility.

Infirmities
Massage can even help with infirmities. Those suffering from arthritis can experience reduced pain and increased mobility in the affected area. Massage also reduces stress levels and improves well-being, important factors that both contribute to a better heart.
