We’re not the same person we were when we were younger. Wisdom, experience and gratitude mold us differently in our later years.
I didn’t like how I looked when I was a teenager. I was self-conscious about my appearance. When going to the beach with my friends, I wore a cute bikini to blend in. The only difference was that I covered up, either by clothing or by standing with my hands in front of me. When I went to college, I made some changes in my diet and started walking and jogging. But despite winning the Miss Playa Blanca contest in Mexico on my 21st. birthday, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the judges might have made a mistake in choosing me. Perhaps my dancing skills and vibrant personality played a role in winning them over!!!
Time heals many wounds. One aspect that healed me was the belief that resembling friends with flawless figures post-high school was crucial. But the pressure to compete lifted as I advanced. As I share my story, I’ve noticed my perspective evolving in a more positive way with age. And despite the physical transformation from my youth, there’s still a part of me struggling to adjust to being slender and in good shape!
I don’t attribute luck to how we take care of ourselves. Rather, change occurs only when the desire is strong enough. Do we aim to age gracefully or allow time to lead us elsewhere? Managing chronic conditions, such as balance issues, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease or post-stroke recovery becomes more achievable with a strong desire to change. I wrote a blog on the stages of change. It could be helpful for you to explore if you haven’t already.
In honor of Parkinson’s Awareness month, I extend my best wishes to all those in my life-friends and clients facing the challenges posed by this insidious disease.
