3183568_origI guess you can answer this question any number of ways. The percentage of women aged 50-plus, who are satisfied is quite low, according to research from the Journal of Women & Aging (2013; 25[4], 287-304).

The report was based on interviews from almost 1800 women who commented on their body-size satisfaction. Only 12% said they were happy with their bodies.

The women who were most satisfied weighed less, had healthy eating habits and exercised more than the women who were less satisfied. This probably comes as no surprise to anyone. These were the women I used to envy in high school. I am still somewhat stuck in the mindset of being overweight from what seemed like a lifetime ago, but I recognize it and meet the challenge head on every day.

In my profession I see women who represent the other 88% of the population, those who want to improve their self-esteem and self-satisfaction. Some are thin but have poor body images, some want to slow the aging process and some just want to improve how they feel, but would never exercise alone no matter what.

Here are some tips:
* Do your homework. I give a few of my clients small, easy assignments to do that help build self-awareness and self-esteem.
* Weighing yourself daily is probably not the best idea. Even small amounts of water gain can change your numbers.
* Keep a journal and write positive affirmations that you know you will read out loud every day. Miracles can happen.
