A personal trainer and nurse since 1999, Kat understood living with physical pain and loss of function at an early age. During her childhood she was diagnosed with scoliosis. This required major surgery with two stainless steel rods implanted along the spinal column to prevent further instability and deformity. She wore a plaster body cast for two years for protection and further correction of the spine. Even after the body cast was removed, team sports and athletics were highly discouraged; the only form of exercise permitted was swimming.
Kat became very frustrated hearing the words “no” and “you can’t”. She channeled that energy with purpose, pushing herself from invalid to achiever!
Kat went on to become a national level swimmer, competitive power lifter, bodybuilder and fitness competitor. She qualified and worked as a lifeguard and AAU swimming coach. Later she became an EMT, working the ambulance, then ER. The nurses encouraged her to go back to school to obtain her nursing degree.
In 2008, Kat observed several coworkers going out on medical leave. With the support and participation of the healthcare staff, Kat developed a fitness program targeting caregivers that were providing bedside nursing care. Over a six-month period, she achieved a significant decrease in job injuries, sick calls and medical leave as compared to previous reports.
In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, Kat cared for critically ill patients at Kaiser Medical Center. She credits her own mental/emotional survival and physical recovery to a lifetime of fitness.
Kat has worked with athletes to those challenged with various medical conditions. Her passion and commitment is to help others to prevent, promote and achieve their individualized health-related goals.
